Start with the course as it is today

The governing starting point is 2023 Rules of Golf from The R&A and USGA. The club or competition committee may then publish approved Local Rules and a current course notice for conditions that players will meet that day.

A marked area of ground under repair, temporary water, a no-play zone, preferred lies or a dropping zone can change the procedure that applies. The useful answer needs the current notice and the physical markings, not just the permanent rule book.

  • The current Rules of Golf and official clarifications
  • The club's approved permanent Local Rules
  • Today's dated course and competition notices
  • The hole, marked area and facts around the ball

Ask about the lie in front of you

Golf questions arrive on the course: “My ball is inside the white GUR line — what relief applies?” or “Is this temporary water under today's course conditions?” The player should not need to search several PDFs before deciding how to proceed.

When the club's current material is connected, a follow-up such as “Does today's preferred-lies notice apply on this fairway?” can keep the course, competition and daily notice in view while the facts are clarified.

Keep permanent and temporary rules in order

The Rules of Golf remain the baseline. Approved club Local Rules, competition conditions and dated course notices add the detail for that venue and round. Roolbot can keep each source visible so a temporary instruction does not quietly replace the governing rule.

Time-bound updates should carry an effective date or expiry. When the committee withdraws a notice or the condition ends, the old instruction should stop appearing as today's rule while remaining available to administrators as a record.

Keep the course update with the people responsible

Roolbot provides source-backed guidance; it does not decide whether an unmarked area is GUR or replace the committee, course officials or an authorised referee. The club remains responsible for its markings, notices and current Local Rules.

Registered questions show which conditions keep causing uncertainty. The club can then update the daily notice, improve a marking or explain the applicable Local Rule before the next field reaches the same spot.

Common questions

Can Roolbot cover today's GUR and temporary water?

Yes, when the club has connected its approved Local Rules and current course notice. Roolbot can present that material beside the Rules of Golf, while the club remains responsible for the actual markings and the notice's accuracy.

How do daily course updates stay current?

A club can publish a dated notice or time-bound temporary rule with an expiry. Withdrawn or expired instructions should no longer be presented as the current condition.

Can it include preferred lies, dropping zones and no-play zones?

Yes, when the committee has approved the Local Rule or course notice and connected the exact wording for the relevant course, holes or competition.

Does Roolbot replace a golf referee or the committee?

No. Roolbot provides guidance from approved sources. The committee and authorised referees remain responsible for Local Rules, course markings and formal decisions.
